What is Significant?
My name is Davíd Alejandro Ciotti Hernandez and I was born and raised in New York City. My parents have never been real artsy, but having the fortune of being my parents child, an Irish midwesterner Mom from Kenosha and my Cuban dad, while also happening to be born in and live my life in a place that happens to be a cultural epicenter of the world, meant that I had so much influence constantly being bombarded on me. I also was a part of my community theatre, because of my older sister, ever since the 1st grade.

The thing is that, said "influence" being so constant from the time I was able to start processing the world, lead me to the subconscious conclusion that the art in a museum, at the movies, in the park, on broadway, or the side of the buildings has been here as long as the earth has existed - you can't just add to it. I could do my finger paints as a child sure, but I'll never make "valid" art. Ever since coming to Lawrence though, I've been able to deconstruct those subconscious thoughts while also learning more about myself through the ways that I chose to express my art.
Separately, as I was growing up, my mom got me interested in history, and later, I would go to learn more about the histories of Ireland and Cuba and also the atrocities that have been and are still currently being committed by the United States government domestically and its puppet states abroad. I cannot fathom how people can be indifferent or even support crimes against humanity; it makes me sick. "Electric circuitry has overthrown the regime of "time" and "space" and pours upon us instantly and continuously the concerns of all other men."(McLuhan, 16)

I am motivated by so many things artistically, and though im aware that not all art has to have a "deep philosophical significance," I always try to start there. Ive definitely made art with less or more "significance," but I don't think that any piece of art can be abstracted from significance, since an artist is influenced most majorly by themselves. Something can be significant to the world, to a community, and even ourselves; the last one being the one I had the most trouble understanding in the past.
Personal, My view at the Info Desk. I've worked at the Info Desk since my 9th day on this campus. This view means a lot to me, maybe other desk workers, but no one else |
I actually really like your water bottle collage because I also feel like the stickers on mine represent me and my interests. Also the combination of your identity and upbringing influencing your visual expression is really cool. Really good post!
